Jessica and Andrew: The Strangling Grip of Control
Jessica thought of herself as a woman who got burned in relationships because sheâd always been attracted to the type of man I call a beach boy. Jessica regarded herself as a fun-loving individual who had nothing against partying. However, at age 30 she came to realize that men who thought life was one continuous party might be fun to be with for a while, but they were not candidates for a long-term relationship. So she set about looking for a man who was âmatureâ and âseriousâ about life. She let her friends know that this was what she was looking for. She signed up for an Internet dating service, filled out her psychological profile indicating her preferences, and waited for the matches to start rolling in.
Jessica was an attractive, petite woman who was also talented and the successful co-owner of a popular salon and day spa. Doing well in that business requires not only a good head for business, but also good social skills and a certain flair, all of which Jessica possessed in abundance. Sheâd gone to college to study business and gotten her degree, but after several years of trying to work her way up a corporate ladder, the opportunity to co-own the salon presented itself and she went for it.
Jessica was introduced to Andrew by one of the salonâs customers, who had written her first book and was celebrating with a book party. Andrew was a professor of English at the same college where the newly minted author also taught. Jessicaâs first impression of Andrew was that he was good-looking, though a bit on the slender side compared to the men she was typically attracted to. He was also soft-spoken and obviously intelligent. He owned his own home, a modest but attractive colonial in a desirable community, and he enjoyed biking and sailing a small, two-person sailboat on local lakes. Jessica suspected that as a professor, Andrew made less money than she did through the salon; on the plus side, he was tenured and had job security.
Andrew would later tell Jessica that he was attracted to her because of her liveliness and disarming smile, her good sense of humor, and her striking good looks. She also seemed to him to be mature for her age. Andrew had what he considered to be several disappointing relationships and was looking to settle down with someone intelligent that he could both talk with and have fun with.
At that point, Jessica had no idea that Andrew was a control freak for whom fun, like everything else in his life, had to be carefully planned and followed to a T. So when he told her that his last vacation was to visit the rainforests in Costa Rica, she thought that sounded like great fun. She did not know the excessive lengths that he had gone through to plan that trip, the detailed and rigid itinerary heâd stuck to, or the fact that he
